IISER Pune launches Masters programme in Quantum Technology

With the launch of the National Quantum Mission, there is a pressing need for a skilled workforce in Quantum Technologies. With this goal in mind, the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune (IISER Pune) has announced the launch of a new Masters programme in Quantum Technology.

This two-year programme will equip students with the skills to work in Quantum Technology. The programme will include significant industry overlap ensuring that a portion of the imparted training has direct industry relevance. The programme will also include courses on Entrepreneurship and Patenting.

Announcing the programme, Professor Sudarshan Ananth, Chair of the Physics department at IISER Pune, said, “Two new Quantum-labs are being set up exclusively for the programme. These labs will offer advanced training in the methods and techniques of Quantum Technology to students of the programme. This new Masters has been designed keeping the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in mind.”

Prof. Ananth said that IISER Pune is ideally placed to offer such a Masters programme because it is host to the DST Technology-Innovation-Hub on Quantum Technologies with 12 faculty members from the physics department working actively in sub-fields of Quantum Technology.

The new Master programme in Quantum Technology was officially launched on April 10,, in the presence of Dr. Ajai Chowdhry, chairman, Mission Governing Body, National Quantum Mission; Professor Ajay Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India; DST Secretary Professor Abhay Karandikar; and IISER Pune Director Professor Sunil S Bhagwat.

Festive offer

The programme will commence later this year with around 20 students, to ensure quality personalised training, and then scale up the strength gradually.
