“DUTIES BEFORE RIGHTS”

“PERFORM SINCERELY YOUR DUTY
LIFE WILL BLESS YOU WITH ITS BEAUTY
DO AND WRITE ALWAYS WHAT IS RIGHT
YOU WON’T BE ROBBED OF YOUR RIGHTS”

From times immemorial we have seen that people have always thought of their own self-interest and for this, they have given priority to their rights and the duties have always been given the back seat.

If we look back on the Mahabharta days, we all are aware of how Duryodhan exploited Pandavas and had made them suffer through numerous ways to grab the throne. He did not pay heed to the duty which he was to perform.

Ravana is no exception who showed his might by kidnapping Sita. These two instances reveal that human beings have always been interested in fulfilling their whims and fancies thereby defying others’ rights.

We all live in a country and while we want to enjoy all rights and privileges we shun the duties that the state expects us to obey.

Rights make us a pillar of the society and duties make us responsible enouh to contribute to the growth of the society we are a part of.

For instance, if we want to live in a pollution-free society then it becomes our duty to start the process of recycling, cleaning, and practicing good actions from our homes. When we talk of students, if they want to enjoy a good campus then it becomes their duty not to make it untidy. In many government colleges, pupils always talk of having plush campuses but it is seen that they have degraded the new building of the college in a mere period of one year of its construction. It is a case that can be seen in many government colleges of Haryana.

Rash driving is another serious issue which the youngsters are often seen doing and they take pride in doing so. There are many instances where their negligence has proved costly for the lives of other people. Even honking or loudspeakers and partying are some cases where the people think it’s their privilege and right to enjoy their life to the hilt without even considering the plight of others due to this.

Duties are being constantly neglected and the so-called educated people are greater in number in doing so.

Now the question arises what can be done to these lawbreakers who just don’t understand the importance of being dutiful and refuse to be a responsible citizen whereas there are some who are dutiful and understand their responsibilities well and work in unison for the growth of the community, state, and nation.

There can be rewards or incentives for those who abide by the law and perform their duty as for example the citizens who follow all the traffic rules or even otherwise take into account all their responsibilities can be given flowers, a small token of regard, the idol of a good citizen, recognized by way of giving them awards and rewards at important days. This will no doubt motivate them to be more vigilant in the future also. It may also instill a sense of responsibility in other citizens also.

The state can penalize the duty shirkers by way of imposing fine, fees, or penalties or even withdrawing some privileges or rights from them as for example suspending their license for a couple of days or students are into mischievous activities can be made to sit in the police station for some hours. These are a few solutions that can be applied to make the situation better in our state.

It is high time that Duties should be talked about more to save other citizens’ rights. Lets work in unison for the betterment of our nation.
