NEW DELHI: As the number of cases continued to rise, the government is all set to extend the 21-day lockdown by two more weeks. In the last 24 hours, India reported 34 deaths and 909 new cases of coronavirus, taking the total number of positive cases to 8,356. There are 7,367 active cases, 716 cured/discharged/migrated and 273 deaths, as per the latest update by the ministry of health and family welfare.

134 more test positive in Maharashtra, taking the state’s tally to 1,895.
According to the ministry’s data updated in the morning, the highest number of confirmed cases in the country are from Maharashtra at 1,761, followed by Delhi at 1,069 and Tamil Nadu at 969.
Worldwide coronavirus cases at 1.7 million, death toll crosses 108,000
More than 1.7 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 108,252 have died, according to a Reuters tally. Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
Hydroxychloroquine is not a treatment for everyone, says Delhi AIIMS director
Some lab data show that hydroxychloroquine may have some effects in Covid-19. But the data are not that strong. Experts at ICMR felt that it may be helpful in close contacts of Covid-19 patients and healthcare workers taking care of the patients, according to Delhi AIIMS director Randeep Guleria.
“Hydroxychloroquine is not a treatment for everyone. It can have cardiac toxicity leading to irregular heart beat. Like any other drug, this also has side effects. It can do more harm than good for general public,” he added.
Covid-19 causes severe disruption to Indian economy: World Bank
The World Bank on Sunday said the coronavirus outbreak has severely disrupted the Indian economy, magnifying pre-existing risks to its outlook. In its “South Asia Economic Update: Impact of COVID-19”, the World Bank estimated the Indian economy to decelerate to 5 per cent in 2020 and projected a sharp growth deceleration in fiscal 2021 to 2.8 per cent in a baseline scenario.
Migrant workers returning home could spread coronavirus in sub-continent, says World Bank
The World Bank said migrant workers returning home could become vectors carrying the coronavirus to unaffected states and villages and that preliminary findings indicated in India many outmigration areas are likely to have Covid-19 cases. In its biannual regional report, the World Bank said South Asia is one of the highest population density areas in the world, and that preventing domestic coronavirus transmission is an enormous challenge in the region.
HCQ consignment from India arrives in US
A consignment of hydroxychloroquine from India arrived in the United States on Saturday, days after New Delhi lifted a ban on export of the anti-malaria drug, seen as a possible cure for COVID-19, to the US and some other countries on humanitarian grounds.
Earlier this week, India at the request of President Donald Trump cleared the export of 35.82 lakh tablets of hydroxychloroquine to the US along with nine metric tons of active pharmaceutical ingredient or API required in the manufacturing of the drug.
US coronavirus deaths top 20,000 with billions in Easter lockdown
The United States passed the grim milestone of 20,000 coronavirus deaths Saturday as huge swaths of the globe celebrated the Easter holiday weekend under lockdown at home. The US became the first country in the world to record more than 2,000 deaths in a 24-hour period from Covid-19 infections.
The outbreak has now claimed the lives of at least 20,506 people in the US, which leads the world in deaths and in the number of declared infections — at least 527,111.
Italy, the hardest-hit country in Europe with a population a fifth the size of the US, recorded 19,468 confirmed virus fatalities.
Russia’s coronavirus cases rise by more than 2,000; biggest daily increase
Russia on Sunday reported 2,186 new coronavirus cases, the largest daily increase since the start of the outbreak, bringing the national tally of confirmed cases to 15,770. The number of coronavirus-related deaths rose by 24 to 130, the Russian coronavirus crisis response centre said.
Akshaya Patra Foundation and associates feed 1.44 cr during lockdown
The Akshaya Patra Foundation, which daily provided mid-day meals to 18 lakh school students in 12 states and two Union territories, has taken upon itself to provide meals daily to lakhs of migrant labourers, poor and destitute during the 21-day Covid-19 lockdown period.
Lockdown set to be extended with some measures to restart economy
Even as the 21-day lockdown looks set to be extended, the Centre in consultation with states is moving to restart economic activity in a graded manner in what marks a major change of approach in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. Spelling out the shift in a video conference with chief ministers on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said while the earlier mantra was “jaan hai to jahan hai (if there is life, you can enjoy the world)”, the way ahead would be guided by “jaan bhi, jahan bhi (life as well as our world)”.
Health ministry reports over 1,000 new cases in a day on Saturday
The health ministry said on Saturday that India’s Covid-19 count had for the first time seen an increase of more than 1,000 cases in 24 hours. Many of these cases, however, had been accounted earlier in TOI’s round-ups of reports from states, which have been indicating an overall surge in the Covid-19 outbreak in the past three days. Delhi, meanwhile, recorded five deaths of coronavirus patients in the past 24 hours, the highest single-day toll in the capital so far, even as the number of new cases continued to remain high at 166. Delhi has so far recorded 1,069 cases, the second city after Mumbai to cross the four-figure mark.
